Author: Jon Boner

In the summer of 2023, Jon Boner, Luca Denti and Patrick Steven Saner met several times in Jon’s home office at Weissensteinweg 3 in Bad Zurzach. The topic of the discussions was the use of artificial intelligence for the benefit of human health and the well-being of societies. This gave rise to the Innovating Health initiative with the mission of supporting sick, disabled and elderly people so that they can live autonomously in their “own four walls”—with the aim of developing digital and on-site solutions for this. Later, the necessary investigation of rare diseases was added, with the vision of creating improved conditions for those affected. This is, in a nutshell, the story of the Innovating Health initiative with its business units Artificial Intelligence, helpThee and Research & Development.

Innovating Health (ih) is a dynamic solution at the intersection of human health and artificial intelligence. By analyzing patterns and trends in health data, we provide preventative health strategies that help individuals maintain optimal health and avoid potential health problems, and provide support when they become ill. Using advanced AI algorithms, we analyze complex health data to identify patterns and predict outcomes. This helps with early diagnosis and personalized treatment plans for patients. Our expertise in machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) enables us to create intelligent systems that understand health-related queries and provide timely, relevant information to those asking questions.

The importance of health

Health is widely recognized as a fundamental aspect of human existence, essential to quality of life. Here we look at various aspects of health that collectively affect the well-being of societies and the life of each individual—from daily functioning to happiness and productivity.

PHYSICAL HEALTH

Physical health refers to the ability to carry out daily activities without excessive fatigue or physical strain. Good physical health is achieved through a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and avoiding harmful habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Regular medical check-ups and vaccinations also play a role in maintaining physical health by preventing and detecting diseases at an early stage.

Mental Health

Mental health encompasses how we think, feel, and act. It determines how we deal with stress and other people, and how we make decisions. Mental health problems such as depression and anxiety are common and can significantly affect quality of life. Access to mental health care, reducing stigma and promoting mental health awareness are of enormous importance for a healthy society.

Social Health

Social health is the ability to build interpersonal relationships and adapt to social situations; this includes communication, empathy and a sense of belonging. Social connections, intact relationships and community engagement contribute to mental and physical health and provide a solid foundation in times of high levels of stress and strain.

The interconnection of health aspects

The aspects of health are interconnected. Physical health can influence mental health and vice versa. For example, chronic physical illnesses can lead to depression, while mental health problems can lead to heart disease and other physical stresses.

Preventive measures

Preventive measures are designed to prevent disease. The means are vaccinations, check-ups and a lifestyle that includes healthy eating, regular exercise and social contacts. Preventive measures are cost-effective and improve the quality of life and general health.

Health inequalities

Health inequalities highlight differences in health status and in the distribution of health resources between different population groups. These inequalities can result from social, economic, environmental and genetic factors. Eliminating health inequalities is essential to achieving fair opportunities for achieving the best possible individual health.

The role of public health

Public health consists of the organized efforts of society through policy, education and research to prevent disease and promote health and well-being. Public health initiatives such as hygiene, vaccination programs and health education campaigns have significantly improved health outcomes worldwide. However, the greatest influence on the health and well-being of a society was and still is achieved through prosperity; no other measure has improved global health as much as the development of prosperity. This is impressively demonstrated by the visualization of the relationship between prosperity and health by the Gapminder organization.

Gapminder Relation zwischen Wohlstand und Gesundheit

Economists use GDP per capita to determine the wealth of countries based on their economic growth. The video correlates life expectancy with per capita income from 1800 to 2022 by country.

Gapminder identifies systematic misconceptions about important global trends and dimensions and develops easy-to-understand educational materials based on reliable data to free people from their misconceptions. Gapminder is an independent Swedish foundation with no political, religious or economic affiliation.

Conclusion

Health is a multifaceted concept that encompasses physical, mental and social well-being. Maintaining good health requires a holistic approach that considers all dimensions and their interrelationships. Preventive measures, the elimination of health inequalities and the role of public health are crucial for a healthy society. Ultimately, prioritizing health leads to a more productive, fulfilling and harmonious life. Investing in health is a necessity and a fundamental human right—it is the cornerstone of sustainable development.
